The Mogul Emerald is one of the largest emeralds in the world. This Colombian emerald that is 217.8 carat and is about 10cm long, dates back to 1695.
Islamic texts describe the gardens of heaven carpeted with emeralds. The Mogul Emperors valued this gem for its talismanic powers. They used to get the stone inscribed with sacred texts and wear it as a talisman.
The Mogul Emerald is engraved with sacred Islamic prayers on one side has floral designs on the other side. It is believed that the Mogul Emperor Aurangzeb, the last of the great Mogul rulers of India, was the first to own this emerald. In 2001, the London jewelers Christies sold this legendary emerald to an anonymous buyer for 2.2 million US dollars.
At present, the emerald is exhibited at the Museum of Islamic Art, Qatar.
